Those in positions of political eminence are have a penchant to manipulate these circumstances for their own personal incentives. The former Prime Minister wasn't contrite about his affluent family's overseas assets and tax havens amid Iceland's fiscal banking crisis. As the Icelandic oil trader mention in the story, there is a cyclical process of appointment/inauguration of duplicitous politicians in to offices with the general population's collective welfare as at secondary precedent before their own monetary affluence and private business ventures. That is, the shifting of chairs, but the same plutocratic gang. This sort of corruption is enrooted in the Icelandic parliamentary system itself as well as in many other world governments. Nordic countries are praised internationally being paragons of democracy, however that doesn't indicate that corruption, nepotism, or misconduct is absent. Gunnlaugsson caused particular strife and public outrage in Reykjavik, as a simular scandel had already befallen the Icelandic people, consequentially resulting in the imprisonment several unscrupulous bankers and complicit businessmen. Soon afterwards a depression engendered and the IMF was galvanized to bail out the country.

Gunnlaungsson's facial expression makes his reprehensibility obvious and upon being asked him to elaborate about his overseas tax haven, he knew that the interviewer had him by the balls at that point.
