A tiny gray speck in the southwestern sky drifts nearer and nearer to Lahtela on the morning of the 4th of October, its smooth, unshakeable course made all the smoother by the calm weather. By the time it settles in over Kalevala International Airport, it has enlarged to a roughly 250-meter rigid passenger airship—an “aerostatic”—bearing the flag of Brovora on its tail fins, its fifteen golden bezants supposed to represent prosperity and a local legend of the spontaneous appearance of enough coins to pay a steep Anglish ransom for the city of Kerdiz in the kitchen of a local baker.

Brovorans are stereotypically humorless—or unfunny, at least. One might come away from Kerdiz with generosity from and rapport with one’s personal hosts, but a cold impression of Brovoran society in general, with the sense that the average person was aloof and even unfriendly. A Brovoran would retort, of course: “only to strangers”. But, thanks to its overlong experiment with isolationism, most of the world was made up of strangers. The task to beat this habit fell to Loeiz Faouenneg: an unfortunately unsmiling, grave man whose solemn mission was progressivism. First Citizens are required to abandon any party ties and remain apolitical figureheads—an obligation Faouenneg has occasionally flouted in favor of making derisive comments about conservatism and supporting measures he once had as an Assemblyman.

When the aerostatic is lowered to the earth, Faouenneg, wearing an immaculate black suit and tie, and a shirt whose snow-white linen makes for a striking contrast, is the first to emerge onto the unfolded airstair, flanked by his coterie of academics; all wear a polite, if formal, air. His wife, Tekla, is nowhere to be seen. Behind them, gray-clad sentries of the Brovoran Security Directorate do their best to look unobtrusive.

New High-Speed Rail Corridor to Connect Major Wansain Cities
新高速鉄道回廊、主要都市を接続へ

WANSAISHI — The Imperial Government has approved the development of a new high-speed rail corridor linking several of Wansai's largest metropolitan areas. The project will create a faster passenger connection between major population and industrial centers, with construction expected to proceed in phases rather than as a single nationwide undertaking. The initial corridor will prioritize connections between Wansaishi and major cities farther south and east, with stations planned to integrate directly with existing conventional rail and urban transit systems. Officials said the project is intended to reduce journey times while strengthening connections between major economic regions.

Construction will include new tunnels, bridges, electrical infrastructure and dedicated high-speed track. The Imperial Railway Authority (IRA) said detailed engineering surveys will begin before major construction contracts are awarded, with environmental and geological assessments required along the proposed route. The Wansaishi Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMTA) has put out a notice to the public that shutdowns on transit lines could interfere with train service for several months as infrastructure projects between the new HSR services and interurban railways are integrated.

Police Raid Underground Fighting Organization in Major Cities
警察、主要都市の地下格闘組織を一斉摘発

SHORIN — Imperial police have conducted coordinated raids against an illegal underground fighting organization operating in Shorin, a major metropolitan suburb of the Wansaishi Megalopolis. Investigators allege that the organization arranged unauthorized bouts, collected illegal gambling revenue and used abandoned commercial and industrial properties as temporary venues. Police operations also targeted locations in Kansō, Pusaka, Tiesto and Tokio. This resulted in arrests and the seizure of cash, betting records and equipment believed to have been used to organize the fights.

Authorities said the investigation remains active and that additional arrests may follow as financial records are examined. Officials stressed that the investigation concerns an illegal commercial operation rather than Wansai's established martial-arts and combat-sports organizations. Licensed wrestling, jujutsu and other competitive programs remain regulated through recognized sporting bodies and continue to operate legally.

To Innokentios Pyotrovich Choiseul-Romanul-Montier
Minister Plenipotentiary of Gustavovich to Brovora

🟡 🟡 🟡 🟡

Citizen Choiseul-Romanul-Montier:

I must confess to my intrigue at my receipt of your proposal. It is no secret, nor something avoided or euphemized, that Brovora and Gustavovich do not enjoy much meaningful trade, and that there remains a broad gulf between the sociopolitics of your nation and my own. However, we have taken your countrymen’s recent invitation for The Brovoran Mercury to cover the ceremonies of state in your homeland to indicate a greater receptiveness to foreign relations, which we hope will profit your people.

Conference with the Minister-President has produced the answer that we will accept such a meeting, to be held at the Free State of Brovora’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Kerdiz at your convenience. It will be our pleasure to charter a private transoceanic aerostatic for the transit of your ministers to and from our island.

In trust and service,

Specification for new Trunk Railways rolling stock published.
Up to 34,000 per day to be transported in modern luxury at 220kph

Discussions between engineers of Hatachi of Wansai and Ariannica National Railways (ANR) have resulted in an initial specification for the renewal of train sets on the Main Trunk Route (MTR). Initial estimates are for 42 sets (of 12) at a cost of $169mn each for a total of $7.106bn - making it by many multiples the largest order ever made by ANR.

The specification includes:

  • Double decked electric multiple unit made up of 12-car sets including:

    • 1x Business Class driving coach: 64 seats

    • 2x 1st class coach: 86 seats

    • 1x Special car: Buffet car with cycle/ski/bag storage underneath

    • 7x 2nd class coach: 126 seats

    • 1x Family driving car with cycle/ski/bag storage underneath

  • For a total bookable seating capacity of 814 with informal seating for around 100 more and 'comfortable' loading of 1000

  • Length of coaches 28m with a total length of 300m

  • Dimensions must match the existing IC sets to suit loading guage

  • Operational speed of 220kph, with maximum safe speed 240kph.

ANR said they have chosen a 'steady, high quality route' to procurement and roll-out with a prototype phase, testing phase and steady construction and deployment over the next ten years.

Under the plan, the existing IC trains will be renovated and their carriages used to bolster capacity on main lines in the south of the country. Service levels will be broadly continued with 18 services per day between Haverton and Yaquina and 16 between Yaquina and Devanbouvé, giving a total daily capacity of about 34,000 passengers along the MTR.

Prime Minister Mr John Reginald Smith is expected to travel to Wansai to sign the agreement with key ANR staff. Hitachi will construct an assembly plant around Winslow Sound as per the recent Trade Agreement signed between the two nations.

I should be able to return to roleplaying next weekend as I would have finished up all my midterms.

Protests in Williamstown
~ Anglandium News Corporation

For the third day in a row, hundreds of people have taken to the streets of Williamstown to protest against the funds that the federal Government have reserved for Occidentium. Those demonstrating argue that the Government is willing to offer them "wildly insufficient funds" to cover all their needs. The Government, on the other hand, points to the fact that the budget of Occidentium has never been so affluent.

What started as a peaceful protest at the local executive office in Williamstown (the capital of Occidentium, a former colony of Anglandium which is now partially run by a local administration and partially by the federal government through a Governor) turned violent today. Apparently, Royal Williamstown FC hooligans joined the protests after a football match, seeking to incite violence against police officers and other peacekeepers.

The Governor of Occidentium, Mr Francis Raleigh, ordered riot police to intervene. Apparently eighty-two people have been arrested so far. Other government sources say that damages "run in the thousands [of Pounds]".

On the other hand, a spokeswoman for the (original) demonstrators says that "[Occidentium] will be severely underfunded if the federal Treasury does not provide much more funds next year. We will face deep cuts in the services that the government will be able to provide to our citizens. We will effectively become second-class citizens, as opposed to the rest of Anglandium.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, The Rt. Hon. Charles Cavendish MP, refutes the point made by the protestors: "we are a party that prioritises stable economic and financial policies. The Government can only spend what it collects in taxes, otherwise, our budget will soon get out of control. [...] I know that the people of Occidentium feel they are getting the short end of the stick, but if they look at the numbers they will see this is not the case. In fact, this year Occidentium will receive their largest sum of money from the national Government in all of its history. We already subsidise and fund the place more than any other part of the Kingdom. Occidentium has the highest number of people on benefits, and it is high time we do something about those costs. They need to be contained. We cannot give ever more to them".

Under the present scheme, Occidentium will get more money than ever, but the increase only partially corrects for inflation. Thus, people will in some instances still have less purchasing power than they have at present. That is why people are frustrated.

Governor Raleigh had a clear message to his citizens: "protest as you want, but keep it peaceful! We have no sympathy for those who use any amount of violence. We all need to live together and make the most of it". More protests have already been announced.

DO AGUALMIANS KNOW THEIR OWN HISTORY? NEW STUDY EXPOSES STAGGERING CIVIC KNOWLEDGE GAP AMONG YOUTH
University of Sint Niklaas research team led by Prof. Dr. Luc van den Berghe sparks political clash over school textbooks and modern media habits.

By Lotte van de Velde | WRT NWS

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
    | SINT-NIKLAAS, How much does the average Agualmian actually know about the history, institutions, and current leadership of their own nation? According to a landmark study released this week by the Faculty of Historical and Social Sciences at the University of Sint Niklaas, the answer is alarming—with younger citizens displaying the most severe gaps in basic historical awareness.

The comprehensive survey, spearheaded by lead researcher Prof. Dr. Luc van den Berghe, presents a stark picture of national memory. When presented with foundational historical facts, only 35 percent of respondents could correctly answer that King Nicholas I was the first monarch of the Agualmians. Similar low percentages were recorded when participants were asked to identify key parliamentary institutions in Gravenloo or explain the current structure of executive power.

Political Crossfire vs. Textbook Reality
The publication of the report instantly triggered heated parliamentary debate in Gravenloo. Factions within the political opposition laid the blame squarely at the doorstep of Prime Minister Sander Cohen’s left-progressive cabinet, accusing the administration of watering down educational standards and intentionally filtering national heritage out of public school instruction.

However, an extensive review conducted by Prof. Dr. Van den Berghe's research team tells a very different story. By examining both state public school attainment goals and the curricula of the nation's Shepardist school networks, investigators confirmed that national history, constitutional development, and civic structures remain thoroughly covered in official course material.

"The facts are not missing from the classroom," emphasized Prof. Dr. Luc van den Berghe during the presentation of the findings. "It is all right there in the textbooks. The real problem is why none of it is being retained by students."

Methodology Shifts and the 'Fast Food' Mind
Educational experts point toward broader pedagogical and cultural shifts to explain the disconnect. Over recent years, teaching frameworks across primary and secondary institutes have moved away from continuous chronological storytelling in favor of fragmented "learning skills" and modular themes. Without a cohesive narrative arc connecting the origins of statehood to modern governance, historical events are treated as isolated facts to be memorized for an exam and quickly forgotten.

Compounding this educational issue is the overwhelming rise of short-form digital media. Researchers warn that youth engagement has become dominated by a "fast food" variant of media—hyper-condensed, rapid-fire video content designed for immediate dopamine hits rather than sustained intellectual focus.

"When young minds are continually conditioned by five-second clips stripped of all depth and context, the brain's capacity for long-term retention, reflection, and historical synthesis grows dull and weak," noted Prof. Dr. Van den Berghe. "History requires narrative patience. If a generation loses the habit of long-form attention, they lose the ability to grasp the very institutions that protect their freedoms."

With the Ministry of Education set to review core curriculum goals next year, lawmakers and educators now face the challenge of reforming classroom instruction before collective heritage slips away entirely.

High Household Credit Card Debt Contributes to Domestic Spending Contraction
高水準の家庭向けクレジットカード債務、国内消費を圧迫

WANSAISHI — Wansai’s economy has entered a period of mild contraction as heavily indebted households reduce discretionary spending, according to newly released economic data. Consumer spending declined during the latest reporting period, with retailers, restaurants and entertainment businesses among the sectors reporting weaker demand.

Economists attributed much of the slowdown to elevated household credit-card balances accumulated during the previous period of strong consumption. Higher monthly repayments have left many households with less disposable income, leading consumers to postpone large purchases and reduce spending on non-essential goods and services. Domestic retail sales have consequently weakened across several major metropolitan areas.

The Imperial Government said there is currently no indication of a broader financial crisis, while the Imperial Central Bank continues to monitor household credit conditions. Officials said employment and industrial production remain relatively resilient, but warned that prolonged weakness in domestic consumption could weigh on economic growth if households continue prioritizing debt repayment over spending.

Hitachi Secures Landmark Ariannican Rail Contract Amid Domestic Economic Slowdown
日立、国内景気減速の中でアリアンニカの大型鉄道契約を獲得

WANSAISHI — Wansain manufacturer Hitachi has advanced negotiations with Ariannica National Railways (ANR) over a major rolling-stock renewal contract valued at approximately $7.106 billion. The agreement covers 42 twelve-car double-deck electric multiple-unit trainsets for Ariannica’s Main Trunk Route, with each set designed for operational speeds of up to 220 kilometres per hour. The order represents a substantial export opportunity for Wansai’s railway manufacturing sector and follows the recent bilateral trade agreement between the two countries.

Under the proposed procurement schedule, production will follow prototype development and testing, with construction and deployment spread over approximately ten years. Hitachi’s planned assembly facility near Winslow Sound is expected to play a central role in fulfilling the contract, supporting skilled manufacturing jobs and creating opportunities for domestic suppliers of electrical systems, components and railway equipment. The phased schedule is also intended to maintain quality control while allowing production capacity to expand progressively.

The contract arrives as Wansai faces weaker domestic consumption and a modest economic contraction, driven in part by heavily indebted households reducing discretionary spending. Economists note that large export orders can help offset softness in the domestic market, although the financial benefits will depend on production schedules, component sourcing and the distribution of work between Wansain facilities and overseas partners. The project is therefore expected to provide sustained industrial activity rather than an immediate boost large enough to reverse the national slowdown on its own.

Prince Masato and Imperial Relative Caught in Illegal Activities During Night of Police Raids
皇子マサトと皇族関係者、警察摘発の夜に違法行為で発覚

PUSAKA — The Imperial Household has been confronted with another public-relations crisis after police detained two members of the Imperial Family during separate operations in Pusaka on the same night. Prince Takahashi Nakamura Masato, 19, was stopped after police allegedly observed him participating in an illegal street race involving heavily modified vehicles, while Prince Takahashi Nakamura Renji, 22, was identified among participants at an illegal underground fighting venue targeted during the ongoing investigation into organized illegal fighting.

Masato was reportedly driving his distinctive hot-pink Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 with black wheels when police intervened following a race on an industrial road outside central Pusaka. The vehicle was reportedly impounded pending investigation. Police have not publicly disclosed whether formal charges will be filed, while the Imperial Household has declined to comment on the incident.

Renji, a son of Emperor Takahashi Ren by one of his concubines, was among individuals present at an illegal fighting venue connected to the wider investigation. Authorities allege that the organization arranged unauthorized fights and illegal gambling. Investigators are examining whether Renji participated in fights himself or was attending as a spectator. The Imperial Household has confirmed that a member of the family was present during the police operation but has not issued a detailed statement regarding his involvement.
