Maximus carefully considered this proposal as to how it would work aswell as the cost and how it would affect the rest of Brittania before he responded “Unfortunately I will need to decline getting involved in the idea. I feel Brittania would not benefit overall from such changes.” He waited a few seconds to allow his decline to be made clear before he made the choice to carry on and turn this discussion positive. “However I would like to talk about trade between our nations, we have plenty of goods that we can export to you such as metals, weapons, veichels and more.” He then waited for James’s reply, he was also curious as to what Raccooniah exported but did not want to ask just yet.

Kyoki Chudoku wrote:

Tokiko Suou could not help but feel a tinge of anxiety as she boarded the Chudokuren transport aircraft. It wasn’t just the fact that she was being accompanied by the Supreme Overlady of All Reality herself- it was a factor, but not the only one. The most major source of uncertainty was the fact that, technically, this was the first diplomacy mission she had been assigned to. The expedition to the Rynese Empire counted in a sense, but that had officially been documented as an arcane investigation, and though this journey would certainly have similar elements, it was of a far different nature.

Aozora was already sitting down, having chosen a window spot on the right side of the rather crammed plane. With most of the major passenger liners being refitted for other duties, none had been available for the relatively paltry diplomatic requirements. I could’ve procured something larger. Aozora herself certainly could have, but...what’s the point? If things do go awry, if this is some kind of trap...we need to be able to get out of their as soon as possible. Big airliners are good for making a dramatic impression. They’re not gonna out-manoeuvre a surface-to-air missile. A pair of Gomon Hito guards entered the vehicle, taking the rear seats on either side. Boxes of arcanometric equipment ended any chance of her sitting beside either of them, so Tokiko sat towards the front left. She took a glance at the pilot as the door closed. Kaya told me that she’s a military type. I hope she was right about that. We might just need it...

With all the limited necessary equipment and personnel onboard, the aircraft began its ascent. Tokiko gazed out of the window. As the vehicle soared into the clouds, skyscrapers and mounds of reconstructed rubble became small and distant. The airstrip itself was soon little more than a line in the distance, insignificant. Structures and asphalt gave way to a small section of coast, and Tokiko recalled the stories of the soldiers who had once fought there. They said that the sand was red because of all the blood. That entire beaches were covered in craters, and corpses, vultures swarming around whatever carcasses they could find without being shot at. I believe those stories. We all do, because we all lived through it. It’s...almost absurd. None of us would trust a word of it, if we hadn’t seen the carnage with our own eyes...

That stretch of coast gave way to the glistening waters of the western Chudokuren Sea. Even the beauty of the ocean caused her to think of scenes of death and despair. The tale of the desperate submarine that had escaped the Tengo defences to call for aid- an underwater battle in which the second Densetsu had lost one of her limbs. The stories of the first naval engagement, of soldiers twisting and turning and falling overboard under the agony of an invisible yet all-annihilating grip, trying to swim away only to be caught between the colliding walls of warships and a crossfire beneath the waves. And most of all, the mental image of a colossal battleship, turning the tide itself against the forces of righteous order, bending reality to the will of a fanatical lunatic until devastating force had at last forced Heaven’s fall. Only as the sight of the shimmering sea faded beneath a layer of snow-white clouds did Tokiko’s mind finally veer away from the terrors of the conflict.

Instead, she focused her working eye upon her nearest passenger- Aozora Chiyumi. The Supreme Overlady of All Reality was a paragon of order, a saviour from darkness, a bringer of justice and a patron of tyranny. By all appearances, she was an unstoppable force, driven by a firm and overwhelming desire to make the world right, risking her own life to do what was necessary. Beneath that hardened exterior, however, was a woman who frequently fought against despair. When she’d first been informed of Sunaiya’s return, her expression had been blank, her tone inscrutable. She’d been fairly silent throughout the whole affair. It had been...hard for her, no doubt, being informed that her allies had been lost. Aozora hadn’t been able to hide her grief back then, back when the news had first come. Tokiko didn’t know all too much about those she spoke of, but what she did know helped her understand where such emotion came from. Of the Sunaiyans, Aozora mainly spoke of a man named Zakiron Tsune, a fierce warrior and a loyal compatriot.

Tokiko forced her mind to return to one of her early days in her position. Everything had been much less easygoing then, at least internally. Distance made brushing off the horror a lot easier. At the time, everybody had been overwhelmed by it- but nobody dared speak of it without a very good reason. So many of us were so fragile. Some of us got over it. Some of us...never will. I survived it. I gained a new, high-ranking post. I emerged a victor. Some died. Some lost everything that mattered. Some lost everything at all. To remind them of that suffering...wasn’t worth the risk. In those times, Aozora had been reclusive, unwilling to return to international affairs herself, utterly focused on the reconstruction efforts. As the streets were cleaned of corpses, desperate rations had been handed out to alleviate the starvation problem- a correlation Tokiko knew was more than a coincidence of timing. And though Aozora had been quiet to the public, she had spoken to those close to her, her Densetsu...and in time, those who had replaced the Densetsu presently or permanently unfit for duty.

When she’d spoken of Zakiron, after news of Sunaiya’s fall, Aozora had done so with a tone of respectful yet terrible remorse. ”He was more than a warrior. He was an advisor. He urged me to escape a cycle of eternal misery, forgave me for the outcome of one morbid duel, fought with me side-by-side against countless Tengokurens, and even distortions of my own Densetsu...he had an understanding, a rare understanding. And now...” Aozora had always trailed off in moments like that. Was it because she refused to accept that it was over? That would fit her stubborn spirit. Was it because she was too overwhelmed to finish? That would fit her seemingly endless sadness and suffering. Tokiko didn’t know exactly how the Overlady felt. All she could do was guess, make estimations, hypotheses as Remon would put it. But even so, she-

“Is there a reason you’re staring at me like that?” Aozora’s voice was devoid of malice, carrying only a sense of empty and unfocused curiosity. Gah! I got lost in thought. Gotta control that or we’re gonna have some real problems when we get there...

“Sorry, my Overlady! I was just...reflecting, that’s all.”

Aozora’s piercing gaze swept over her. Then, she nodded. “I understand. Not much else to do here, is there? Except talk I suppose. We should’ve gotten someone to install a screen in here somewhere...” For one with so much investment in the matter, she didn’t seem very focused on the mission itself. But Tokiko didn’t dare question her. While she wasn’t bound by the innate loyalty of a tenshi, Tokiko was a loyal follower of the Overlady, and knew better than to demand anything of her. She’s probably just as reflective about it as I am, just...better at hiding it. I need to up my concealment game...

The remainder of the journey was uneventful. The fastest possible flight path had been organised, which involved passing over the Warsaw Pact territory. The very existence of such territory was a reminder of the might of order, how tyranny had overcome attempts to cause chaos and resulted in the triumph of righteous vengeance. Since they had all the necessary authorisation, passing through Pact-controlled territory, and member nations of the alliance, was both easy and efficient, and offered a fairly direct pathway to Suniaya’s new recorded location.

On occasion, Tokiko would talk with Aozora, always over minor and minute things, almost childish things. What did the clouds remind them of? Tokiko had tried finding some kind pattern in them just for fun, but Aozora had only said two sentences on that topic- “Does it matter? They’re clouds.” Did they remember the war which had won them the Warsaw Pact territory? Tokiko had only heard of it as a distant matter. “Of course I remember it,” said Aozora, “they wouldn’t stop reminding me about how I’d mobilised too late to actually count as a part of it.” These discussions seemed to offer little insight, seemed to only be a way to pass time- but Tokiko couldn’t help but ponder on how they reflected Aozora herself. She tried to see clouds for what they were. No fancy metaphors, no deep meaning, just...clouds. And she seemed almost disappointed about missing out on the conflict, even though now, war was viewed as a horror and a thing to be avoided where possible.

At long last- even the best conversation wasn’t exactly match for in-flight movies, and these talks had been terse at their most eloquent- the aircraft began its descent towards new Sunaiya. No fighters came to blast them out of the sky, no anti-air missions soared to destroy them, no arcane rifts tore them asunder. Instead, the aircraft landed without incident. The Gomon Hito were the first to exit, taking basic arcanometric instruments and their SB-09K carbines. Tokiko got up next, stepping outside and onto Suniayan soil. Finally, Aozora Chiyumi herself exited the aircraft, scythe in hand. The Chudokurens had arrived in a land they had once thought lost.

Sumāto Risunā stood between a procession of Imperial Guardsmen that stood in two flanking lines perpendicular to the foreign aircraft that had just touched down. The infantrymen had their rifles held tight to their bodies and pointed in the air, the standard 'at-attention' stance in the Imperial Sunaiyan Army and many others. Their green with red trim uniforms were crisp, clean, and slightly ornamental, as if part of some honor-guard for important officers, but they were also of a very old style compared to most other nation's armies.

One could find these uniforms as part of a historical photoshoot or military reenactment of a full century prior - and so could their rifles! Bolt-action, bayoneted, mostly wooden... but once their guests looked around at the rest of the area, it seemed as if the nation truly went back in time! Military and civilian bi-planes were parked in wooden hangers beside the relatively short airstrip, the nearby port was filled with steam-powered warships and cargo vessels, and the city just a short drive ahead was built with an archaic architecture, being mostly of wooden structures with a design that was only seen in history books.

It could not be denied, this 'new' Sunaiya was living a full century in the past. But not all was obsolete machinery and horse-drawn carts mingling with puttering early 20th century cars... the reason Sunaiya showed up on the arcanometer was still much alive and unconcealed to them: Violet-colored smoke spewed from the great smokestacks of the steamships traveling from port, the few factories in town, and the exhaust of the cars and trains going up and down their respective lines. Glass globes of many sizes contained no electric source connected to them, but still possessed luminous orbs that lit up the interiors of many buildings, and a simple-dressed cargo-mover casually levitated and stacked large wooden boxes off a truck without even touching them. It seemed some kind of magic was in widespread use, no matter where Aozora and her retinue looked.

Sumāto Risunā stepped forward towards the guests in her simple red and white kimono, then bowed to them in professional respect. "Welcome, Teikoku no tomodachi." She spoke first, referring them as 'friends of the Empire'. "I am Sumāto Risunā, Minister of Foreign Communications. And this..." She stood back up, smiling proudly, and raising her arms out in a dramatic sweep. "is the Empire of Sunaiya!"

"Watashitachiha, Sunaiya no hitobitodearimasu! Jōshō suru!" (We are the people of Sunaiya! We rise!) The Guardsmen resounded with right after, like a proud and patriotic warcry.
