"Self improvement will leave you empty.
It nearly ruined my life.
In 2014, as I sat in organic chemistry, the room got fuzzy. I gripped the desk to keep balance.
"What was that?" I thought.
A week later, while in a public health course, my heart felt like it was going to come out of my chest.
It wasn't my heart.
I was having panic attacks.
I needed anxiety medicine.
"But how could this happen to me?" I thought.
I was premed with a nearly perfect GPA. I was a 2 year starter on the college football team. I had lots of friends.
My life was going exactly like I had planned. I had made it all happen.
And yet, I was empty inside.
I assumed that reaching personal goals would be fulfilling. I was wrong.
Because one day you will reach your goals, and you'll find nothing on top of that mountain.
We've been sold the lie that meaning and purpose come from within. They don't.
Because we are all wanting to answer this question: Am I enough?
So we work hard to prove that we are. But the truth is, self improvement is a never ending treadmill. You will always be able to "be better."
You will never be enough.
Once I realized this, I learned I needed someone else to tell me I'm enough. This isn't weakness. This is by design.
God put a God sized hole in each of us. He uses it to call us home. We cannot fill it with becoming better humans.
The only answer for the ache we all feel is to hear Him tell you that you are loved, accepted, and ENOUGH.
Hearing God say this changed everything. I got off anxiety medication.
